Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza Restaurant & Sports Bar® has a long and eventful history dating back to 1964. It all started with Gus Agiortis, a Greek immigrant who opened the first “Boston Pizza and Spaghetti House” in Edmonton, Alberta. Six years later, Gus had 17 locations and Boston Pizza had evolved from a simple pizza joint into a full service casual dining restaurant. Gus believed that a potential franchisee didn’t need a restaurant background, just strong people skills, a passion for hard work, and lots of ambition. That philosophy still stands true today.
With the chain’s rapid growth, a young officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Jim Treliving, was drawn to the company and in 1968 opened the first franchised location. In 1973, Jim partnered with George Melville and over the next ten years they opened a total of 16 restaurants. In 1983, Jim and George purchased the entire 44-unit chain, then known as Boston Pizza. The partners still own and oversee operations for all restaurants today. Currently, Boston Pizza is the predominant casual dining restaurant concept in all of Canada, with over 350 locations.
In 1998, the Boston Pizza team expanded south of the border into the United States, setting up its American headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The first U.S. Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza Restaurant & Sports Bar® (Boston’s) opened in December 1998 in Tempe, Arizona.
With over 40 locations across the U.S. and Mexico, and with numerous restaurants in development over the next few years, the Boston’s team continues to grow. Now most commonly known as Boston’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, our promise of delivering “two experiences under one roof” continues to satisfy our Guests and bring success to our franchisees.
